Rising basketball star ID’d as teen fatally shot near N.J. high school

A teen shot to death in East Orange on Monday has been identified as a local high school student, a valuable athlete, and a budding basketball player with a bright future ahead.

Latrell Duncan, 16, was a student at East Orange Campus High School. He was considered one of the top 10 basketball recruits in the state.

No arrests have been made in connection with the fatal shooting on Lincoln Street in Newark. Officials said he was shot four times and died from his injuries.

Duncan was regarded as one of the top youth basketball prospects in New Jersey.

He scored 180 points last season as a freshman on the East Orange campus. The crime scene is a little over half a mile from where Duncan attended high school.

Essex County Acting Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens II and East Orange Police Chief Phyllis Bindi said on Tuesday that the shooting was being investigated.

 Duncan also starred on the AAU circuit for the Garden State Bounce, which an Instagram page described as one of the top 10 young recruits in the state.
